The Five Most Dangerous Roads in Baton Rouge

Share

We all know how crazy traffic can get in our city. It’s an unfortunate truth, but even the most cautious of drivers can get into an accident thanks to the negligence of others—especially when trying to traverse one of our many dangerous intersections.

According to a 2016 study, Baton Rouge ranked as the second most dangerous city for drivers just behind Detroit. Although other cities had more crashes, Baton Rouge’s much smaller size yielded the highest number of deadly accidents per capita: 16.6 per 100,000.

Worst Areas for Driving

The encouraging news is that for years the city has tried to cope with the sketchy state of our roads. Baton Rouge’s Green Light Plan went into effect over a decade ago to combat the city’s terrible driving statistics. But often the worst intersections are not the ones targeted. Last year there were 400 accidents on one stretch of Nicholson Drive, and the Green Light Plan’s estimate to fix it will cost more than $42 million. That’s part of the reason it was not first in line fort Green Light Plan.

Here are the most dangerous roads in Baton Rouge along with their accident count:

  1. Nicholson Drive – 400 accidents
  2. O’Neal Lane from Harrell’s Ferry Rd & I-12 – 340 accidents
  3. Staring Lane from Highland to Perkins – 340 accidents
  4. Highland Road from Perkins to Airline – 245 accidents
  5. Burbank Drive from Lee Drive to Bluebonnet – 238 accidents

The stretch of I-12 Eastbound / Essen Lane to O’Neal Lane even made The Daily Beast’s annual “Highways from Hell” list in 2012.

Dishonorable Mention

Another news source asked readers to detail problem areas on their Facebook pages. When asked which intersection was the worst, many respondents quipped “all of them.” But the spots listed below received the most complaints from local drivers in Baton Rouge:

  • Perkins Road & Siegen Lane
  • College Drive & Hooper Road
  • Bluebonnet Boulevard & Perkins
  • Essen Lane & Perkins
