Burn Cases

According to the American Burn Association, an estimated 500,000 people will be treated for burn injuries every year. Of those injuries, 4,000 will unfortunately end in the victim’s death. Severe burn injuries can be devastating both psychologically and financially for not only the burn victim, but also their family. If you or your family member has received a debilitating burn injury due to the negligence of another party, you may be eligible for damages under personal injury laws in the state of Louisiana.

Burn Severity

The severity of the burn is determined by how deeply the burn penetrates your skin. There are three degrees of burn severity, with 1st degree burns being the least severe and 3rd degree burns being the most severe.

  • 1st Degree – 1st degree burns damage only the epidermis, or outermost layer of the skin. Common characteristics of 1st degree burns include redness, irritation and mild swelling.
  • 2nd Degree – 2nd degree burns are distinguished from1st degree by blistering and even white skin. 2nd degree burns damage the entire epidermal layer and portions of the dermis, or second layer of skin.
  • 3rd Degree - By far the most severe type of burn, 3rd degree burns literally destroy the first two layers of skin and can even damage muscle, nerves and even bones.

Depending on the severity of the burn, hospitalization may be required for some time as well as one or numerous skin grafts to repair the damaged area. These treatments may never fully repair the damaged area and can be devastating to a family’s finances.
